Anisotropic finite elements: Error estimates and applications

Abstract

Anisotropic meshes are characterized by elements with large or even asymptotically unbounded aspect ratio. Such meshes are known to be particularly effective for the resolution of directional features of the solution, like edge singularities and boundary layers. In the course we focus on the proof of local interpolation error estimates but discuss also other aspects as applications to the approximation of boundary layers, a posteriori error estimates, or the solution of the resulting system of equations. The participants should realize that the minimal angle condition for finite elements (shape regularity) can be replaced in many cases by the more general maximal angle condition. The prize is that the numerical analysis is more challenging. The participants learn to identify common misbeliefs and typical difficulties and methods for their treatment.
