Boundary Element Methods

Prof. Dr. Olaf Steinbach

Abstract

This lecture is on the mathematical and numerical analysis of boundary integral equation and boundary element methods. Although these methods are in most cases restricted to partial differential equations with (piecewise) constant coefficients, there is a wide range of applications, in particular when considering problems in exterior unbounded domains such as acoustic and electromagnetic scattering, electrostatics and magnetostatics, linear elasticity etc.

The topics will include:
  • direct and indirect boundary integral formulations
  • construction of fundamental solutions
  • mapping properties of boundary integral operators
  • solvability of boundary integral equations
  • stability and error analysis of Galerkin discretizations
  • iterative solution and preconditioning
  • integration and implementation
  • coupling of boundary and finite element methods
  • fast boundary element methods
  • applications and current trends
